The holidays are just around the corner, and people are looking for fun gift ideas for their friends and family. The Kansas Lottery is reminding players that only those 18 years or older are able to play. 

The Kansas Lottery, in partnership with the National Council of Problem Gambling and the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors at McGill University, is joining the global campaign to encourage players to “gift responsibly” this holiday season. 

The “Gift Responsibly” campaign advocates for responsible gambling as well as reminds players that “lottery tickets aren’t child’s play” and should not be given as gifts to minors (individuals younger than 18 years old). 

“While gifting lottery tickets is a fun and festive way to celebrate the holidays, lottery tickets are not for children,” said Executive Director Stephen Durrell. “The Kansas Lottery is very serious about responsible gaming and reminds all gift givers that lottery products should only be given to those 18 years or older.” 

It is illegal for a Kansas Lottery retailer to knowingly sell a lottery ticket to a minor. The potential penalty for selling lottery tickets to a minor is up to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Minors are also prohibited by law from claiming a prize won on a Kansas Lottery ticket. 

So remember, if you’re going to gift Lottery products this year, keep a person’s age in

mind and gift responsibly!
